St Cuthbert's Cave

St Cuthbert's Cave is historic site located in Belford, Northumberland. It gets called Cuddy's Cove by people more local to the area.

We visited this place with our good friend Frank. All three dogs really enjoyed themselves. It was Willow's first 'hike' and she done really well.

We expected the cave to be at the end of the walk but you're at the cave within the first 15/20 minutes from parking up (granted you to go the carpark we went too, which can be found below). The Cave itself isn't very deep, it's more like a little cove but it's still great to see! You can walk round to the top of the cave for a good view but I fully recommend putting your dog on the lead if you do as the fall could be quite dangerous.

We had the cave to ourselves the entire time we were there. We got there for about 9:30am. After having a little sit down and getting some photos, we decided to carry on walking. There is a hike trail you're meant to follow but we decided to just let the dogs lead the way. We ended up at a logging area and came to a gate which required your dogs to be on a lead due to livestock. We decided to turn back at this point and head back to the car as we had walked nearly 3 mile at this point and didn't want to overdo Willow.

On the way back, we noticed a lot more people so we figured the cave was going to be busy, which it was. We walked up the hill which runs alongside the cave. When you reach the top, you get some amazing views of the surrounding areas and Holy Island. There was a cow/bull field on the opposite side of this hill but they were all a good distance away so the dogs never noticed.

This was a really fun walk for all. The dogs were off the lead the entire time apart from when we were climbing so it was really dog friendly.

Parking Information

We parked at the National Trust car park. I'd say there's maybe about 20 spaces but as we were leaving, people were parking on the grass verges that run alongside the road. The car park is free.
